Graystone Consulting - Chicago

Our Story

With over 125 years combined industry experience and a partnership that has spanned 25 years, the Graystone team led by James Whitney, Michael Sakach, Mary DiChristofano and Brian Birnbaum brings an unparalleled level of diversity and sophistication rivaled by few in Wealth Management.

Prior to Graystone, James, Michael and Mary founded Frye Louis Capital Management, Inc., the first multi-family office business in the Midwest. As a testament to the success of Frye Louis, Credit Suisse entered the family wealth management market by acquiring the group in 2001. Jim managed this business until 2016, when the group joined Morgan Stanley Graystone. Since the team’s early days, they have been focused on providing a select group of highly successful families with significant means with institutional quality, independent investment advice. James and Michael both came from investment management and trading backgrounds, while Mary’s background was more oriented towards wealth strategies and financial planning. Brian joined the trio upon the transition to Morgan Stanley from Mercer Investments, where he was head of Midwest Consulting, rounding the group out by adding a specialty in institutional investing and consulting. These four advisors are supported by ten professionals, with areas of focus ranging from financial analysis to wealth planning, with varying degrees of distinction, including, Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner. The team is split into sub-teams for each client, with at least two advisors, a financial officer and analyst per client, and is thus well equipped to meet a wide variety of client needs.

Being under the Graystone umbrella gives the group flexible discretion over with whom to invest clients’ assets, an unusual privilege in the wealth management industry. This effort is led by Matthew Jennings, Vice President-Director of Business Strategy and a member of the team for over fifteen years, whose responsibilities span research, investment analysis, manager diligence and custom solutions for clients. Driven by strong relationships with leading asset managers and a thorough approach to research, the team has sourced and developed opportunities to create large bespoke custom solutions for clients in the alternative space. As a result, the team has developed a strong practice within the alternative investment space, leveraging the vast resources and research of a global firm the size of Morgan Stanley, while providing clients with the accessibility and involvement expected from a family office. Through providing these services, alongside life event consulting and investment strategy advisory, the team sets the client up for success for generations to come. The team has particular experience in next generation wealth education and feels passionately that education is critical to maintaining families’ legacies. The team shares a cornerstone value of philanthropy, with each team member committed to giving back to the community on an individual basis and via a team effort with the Ronald McDonald House.
