Bradley Backus

(212) 761-5435(212) 761-5435

With nearly ten years of experience, Brad Backus works with clients in an advisory role, establishing strategic asset allocations, constructing portfolios and implementing custom strategies for ultra-high net worth individuals, foundations and endowments. He focuses on manager selection, analyzing third-party managers using the Firm’s proprietary manager research database and performs additional due diligence via direct meetings with portfolio managers. In addition to managing and monitoring multi-asset portfolios, Brad plays a central role in the team’s business development efforts.

Brad began his career as an Investment Banking Analyst in Morgan Stanley’s municipal division in 2006 where he had over $2 Billion of transactional experience working with senior managed bond issues and derivative transactions for leading tax-exempt health care institutions. Brad also provided strategic advice to not-for-profit health care systems on a variety of issues, including merger and acquisition targets, rating agency strategy and debt capacity analysis.

In 2008, Brad joined Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management, a boutique business within Morgan Stanley Wealth Management that is exclusively focused on the ultra-high net worth client segment. Brad was promoted to Private Wealth Advisor in 2016. Given their experience in nonprofits, Brad’s team joined Graystone Consulting to better serve their current and prospective foundation and endowment clients.

Brad concentrates on the following areas:
• Investment manager selection
• Customized asset allocation strategies
• Investment policy statement development
• Multi-generational wealth planning

In 2018, Brad joined a select group of fewer than 3% of Morgan Stanley Financial Advisors who have completed Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s rigorous Family Wealth Director (FWD) certification program. Building on his experience working with ultra-high net worth families, the training he received enables him to better assist clients with a broad spectrum of wealth management areas, including:

• Business succession planning and monetizing business ownership
• Alternative investments
• Control and restricted securities
• Equity and interest rate risk management
• Wealth transfer
• Family Governance and Dynamics
• Philanthropic Services

Brad is an active volunteer with TutorMate, an innovative literacy platform that pairs professionals in New York City with first graders to offer weekly tutoring sessions. He is also active with Student Sponsor Partners, a program designed to mentor high school students and help them prepare for college.

Brad earned his B.A. in English from Amherst College.

You should understand the differences between a brokerage and advisory relationship. When providing you brokerage services, our legal obligations to you are governed by the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the rules of self-regulatory organizations such as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and state securities laws, where applicable. When providing you advisory services, our legal obligations to you are governed by the Investment Advisers Act, Federal statutes and regulations relating to retirement accounts, and applicable state securities laws. These latter advisory obligations govern our conduct and disclosure requirements, creating a legal standard which is referred to as a “fiduciary” duty to you. We also may have a fiduciary duty to you, with respect to brokerage retirement accounts.

Please reach out to your Financial Advisor if you have questions about your rights and our obligations to you, including the extent of our obligations to disclose conflicts of interest and to act in your best interest. For additional answers to questions about the differences between our advisory and brokerage services, please consult with your Financial Advisor or review our Understanding Your Brokerage and Investment Advisory Relationships brochure available at
